The Tutorial Need: MMORPGs

The virtual world awaits: with pixels to slay and graphics to conquer. You’re fascinated by the notion of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (more affectionately called a MMORPG). You want to seek out battles, defeat gruesome enemies and rally for the cause of good — without having to leave the comforts of home. It seems like the ideal solution to your gaming needs.

It’s instead frustrating, however, as you start to play — with the rules elusive, the purpose unknown and all other users hating your every move. They toss out insults in the chat rooms; they abandon you during quests. You’re without a friend (or even an apathetic acquaintance) and… you don’t know why.

The reason is all too easy, however: no tutorials were studied and you spent your first sessions asking endless questions — many of which were already charted in guides and strategy books.

A MMORPG demands more than enthusiasm. It instead requires an understanding of a world and its rules. Users must be aware of what’s to happen before they even create their first character. Refusing to do this results in slow interactions and angry players — with all efforts then doomed to fail.

Tutorials are therefore essential. These step by step explanations allow novices to learn what they must: from basic playing etiquette to character customization and beyond. They enable users to understand how a realm is maintained and what is subsequently expected of them. And this is vital — ensuring that absurd questions are answered long before chatting begins.

A MMORPG requires patience…. and studying.

Gaming Addiction: Know When to Get Help

Online and computer games are a lot of fun! There’s action, adventure, story, and always a challenge. However, if not monitored closely, online gaming can actually become a very dangerous addiction. With an increase of games like World of Warcraft, online gaming has gotten a lot of attention, for good and bad. There’s also been a lot of notice about how online games are harming lives, sometimes even destroying marriages and families. If you love your online games, but are worried there might be an addiction starting, here are some ways you can curb your addiction.

1. Admit there is a problem. You can’t actually change your ways if you don’t recognize there is some changing to be made.

2. Get some help. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help. Talk to your friends and family and ask them to help you have a healthy balance in your life. You could also use online resources like Rehab-International.org.

3. Step away from the computer. If you need to stop gaming, you’ve got to step away from the computer. Make a conscious decision not to turn the computer or the Wii on.

4. Find another hobby. Replace your gaming time with another hobby. For example, when you feel the urge to play Warcraft, go for a run instead. Think of all the calories you’ll burn as well!

5. Be patient. There will be slip ups and you could even relapse a little bit. Remember to be patient with yourself. The most important part of recovery is wanting to recover, so once you know you have slipped up, simply pick up the pieces and try again.

Overcoming a gaming addiction can be very difficult, however not impossible. If you suspect an addiction is forming, stop now and make the changes you need to before a full-fledged addiction occurs.

Why Aren’t You Playing Minecraft?

Minecraft is a first-person game with one mode that is free to play and another that is currently in Beta mode but that costs to play. It is an independent PC and Mac game that involves crafting, exploration, building, dungeon crawling, monster fighting, treasure collecting and so much more. The map is created dynamically when you first begin the game, and the world is so huge that you will be hard pressed to find its edges.

As the name would suggest, this game has a mining element. You collect materials including dirt, water, stone, sand, clay, coal and wood and then turn them into building materials and tools. Tools allow you to mine ores like iron, gold and diamond so that you can create stronger tools and armor. During the day you are relatively safe to explore the world, but at night the monsters come out, and they do not rest until the sun rises. Some monsters die in the sunlight while others do not — and this creates a need for you to have a place to hide when the monsters become overwhelming.

Mine for materials, build your own hideaway, build anything you like, stalk monsters at night and search for dungeons and treasures by day. The possibilities are endless when it comes to this simple and yet complex sandbox-style game. The graphics have a crude but enjoyable feeling to them, and everything is very simple building blocks, even your character. If you loved Lego bricks as a child and want to transition your love for building into a playable game with dungeon crawling, monsters and exploration, then Minecraft is well worth picking up. In its Beta stage, the game is only going to improve, and the single creator for the game is constantly working to improve upon it, adding in additional playability including a Multiplayer server mode.

Gaming and gambling have long had a very close relationship. For as long as there have been board games and card games, people have been placing bets and trying to earn cash or prizes by betting the odds and winning the game.

Gambling and gaming can be traced all the way back to the first known board game, Senet. Senet is a board game of 30 squares, some which represent the afterlife and death. The object of the game is to race against your opponent and try to drop off all your pieces by moving from one end of the board to the other, each time dropping off a piece. Players of Senet would place bets against the winner. These bets ranged from fresh food and clothing to small monetary bets.

Board games were just one form of gaming and gambling. Another form was the card game. The first known card game is the Chinese Mahjong. Mahjong includes small paper cards that had pictures in which the players matched up the pictures and removed the pieces. While it is not the traditional card game that gamers are used to today, it is the earliest known form of card games. Mahjong has often been played competitively and it can only be assumed that there were side bets placed while this game was in existence.

It is believed that these early forms of board and card games have influenced the popular card and board games that people play today. The most influenced game is the card game, poker. Poker is the world’s most popular form of gambling and gaming. Poker has transformed from a card game that travelers played on the side to get some extra money to an elaborate game that ranges from custom poker tables for home use to online casinos to huge casinos filled with hundreds of poker tables.
