We live in a world of instant gratification. It is also a world that is far busier than ever before. Technology has flattened the globe once again, making it possible to do business on a global scale and to communicate with friends and family anywhere in the world. We have become used to this way of living and the growing popularity of technology like the smartphone and the Android Tablet have made it even easier for use to indulge ourselves in a veritable smorgasbord of communication, gaming, and networking. It can also lead to a new addiction – the smartphone addiction.

Take, for example, something as simple as PC games. Today’s games, like the popular MMORPG games, are based on the idea of a global playing field. Playing these games on a laptop or traditional PC confined the user to playing only where they had power and an internet connection. The Android Tablet and smartphones made it possible to play these games almost anywhere and at any time.

Naturally, this increased exposure has lead some users to become overly reliant on smartphones in general. There is such a thing as a smartphone addiction. The inability to go more than five minutes without checking to see if you have new mail may indicate a problem. Checking your smartphone in the bathroom, or worse, the bedroom, may also indicate a problem.

The good news is, once you have had your smartphone or Android Tablet for a while, the overwhelming urge to stay connected will go away. Once it has, you can begin to use your smartphone or tablet as it was meant to be used.

When Gaming is Good for Kids

Video and PC games greatly appeal to the youth and this is why they have such high levels of demand the world over. Every year, game manufacturers release new consoles with cutting edge technology and features along with new and updated gaming titles that kids vie for and spend a lot of their monthly allowance on. It is true that, if unchecked, a child’s love for video or PC games may turn into an addiction with several hours in a day being spent playing games. Parents are right when they worry about how such levels of gaming will impact their child’s mental and physical growth. There are many games available in the market that have extreme violence and adult content that are easily accessible to minors as video and PC games don’t undergo strict censorship. Playing video games for hours reduces a child’s physical activity while poor posture while playing can lead to developmental issues. However, parents should remember that video and PC games can actually be beneficial for their children if they exercise a little control.

Parents should always check what gaming titles are being purchased by their child. Children often borrow titles from their friends so it’s good to check in once in a while when your child is playing. For a large chunk of the youth, characters in games are as popular and well known as movie characters, the fine points of the game being appreciated as much as the details of a master’s painting. Art form or not, gaming remains a widely popular form of entertainment.

Gaming and gambling have long had a very close relationship. For as long as there have been board games and card games, people have been placing bets and trying to earn cash or prizes by betting the odds and winning the game.

Gambling and gaming can be traced all the way back to the first known board game, Senet. Senet is a board game of 30 squares, some which represent the afterlife and death. The object of the game is to race against your opponent and try to drop off all your pieces by moving from one end of the board to the other, each time dropping off a piece. Players of Senet would place bets against the winner. These bets ranged from fresh food and clothing to small monetary bets.

Board games were just one form of gaming and gambling. Another form was the card game. The first known card game is the Chinese Mahjong. Mahjong includes small paper cards that had pictures in which the players matched up the pictures and removed the pieces. While it is not the traditional card game that gamers are used to today, it is the earliest known form of card games. Mahjong has often been played competitively and it can only be assumed that there were side bets placed while this game was in existence.

It is believed that these early forms of board and card games have influenced the popular card and board games that people play today. The most influenced game is the card game, poker. Poker is the world’s most popular form of gambling and gaming. Poker has transformed from a card game that travelers played on the side to get some extra money to an elaborate game that ranges from custom poker tables for home use to online casinos to huge casinos filled with hundreds of poker tables.
